The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.

Directed by Zoey Louise Moonbeam Dawson Shakespeare Company.

I loved this show so so SO much. It was enjoyable, witty, humerous, clever and of course a little bit dramatic. The actors were not only so very convincing in their roles (which i personally don’t see often in emerging melbourne productions) but their every move, every line and gesture was just fascinating to watch.

Such a pleasure to photograph this production.

This was the show I assistant directed! All of March I was burned with a yearning desire to be back in Melbourne if only to be able to see one night of this show with an audience. All the ladies involved in this show - on stage and off - were aces and brilliant and amazing to work with! So proud to have been a part of this beautiful show.

Highlights: Nikki in the pink wig is doing a choreographed dance to Teenage Dream. Devin in the last photo as skeezeball Paris in his striped sweater. Laura in the blazer and glasses in a genius turn as Capulet. The lady in the middle in the very first photo? The fantastic director, Zoey Dawson. The adorable Brigid as Juliet, geeking out to Katy Perry in her white dress. Naomi as the Romeo that got the room all hot and bothered! Caz as a brilliant Nurse! The kick ass Harriet (in the slate grey tee) as stage manager! ALL OF IT <3

This is the trailer for a Melbourne production of The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet happening from next Wednesday the 29th to March 11th at fortyfivedownstairs. I’m an assistant director on the show and I feel so, so lucky to be involved (I stage managed the 2010 production of this particular show) not only because Shakespeare could write, dudes! - but also because of the amazing and wonderful people involved in the show, not least the wonderful director Zoey and the gorgeous and talented actors you can see in the video above. I teared up watching this today?! (granted, it’s an emotional time for me) But seriously, I’m so proud of this show and so proud to be a part of it. Please come down and watch it if you’re in Melbourne, it’s going to be so spectacular!

Baby, it’s a straight up thunderstorm outside

Up until about an hour ago, Melbourne had a tornado warning. Hailstones have been falling from the sky, and I’ve seen them described as golf-ball/grape/grapefruit/lemon-sized all over the Internet. I took a video of the first hailstorm, so gleeful and excited was I to see these crazy weather conditions on Christmas Day. Now it’s raining buckets and thundering. All the lights are on inside and I am home alone. It’s kind of perfect.

I’m on the pullout couch, and I’m watching One Day in fits and starts (it’s pretty boring, but Jim Sturgess is nice to look at). I had a bubble bath just an hour ago, heavy on the bubbles, in a bathroom lit by tealights, listening to Coeur de Pirate and Young the Giant. Three large-ish circles of white in my courtyard tells me I missed the bigger hailstones, but I did wonder if one was going to crash through the bathroom vents while I was soaking in the tub.

I’m feeling a little bit boneless and fragrant, my skin soft from the water and the lotion I’ve put on. I’m working through the eight dozen snickerdoodles I baked the other day, and I’m still full from the two lots of butter chicken and rice I had for lunch. Since my housemates are all away, I’ve been walking around the house with no pants on, the ultimate luxury. Yesterday I had the air conditioning on pretty much non-stop. I’ve been talking to myself a lot more, singing louder and laughing a lot harder.

There’s some pretty morose shit happening on my social networks, both related and unrelated to the current festivities. Christmas is a complicated time. In a way I’m kind of happy I can buy out of the holiday, simply because I’ve never been brought up to celebrate it. I’m glad for the happy updates though, and I hope the sad ones ease up before the entire holiday is over. I wish there were more people online I could talk to, because I want a little company but not if it means they’re in my house and/or I have to put my pants on. But you can’t have everything, I suppose.

I don’t eat as well without Cass around. I am, however, quite proud to have participated in three of the meals pictured above.

Our short film, Tiny Earthquakes, has recently completed principle photography and needs your help in order to complete its production stage and move onto the post-production phase.

This is a project that has been in the works since late 2010, and its initial progression was made possible by the generous donations of friends, family and international supporters. In order to finish what we started, we need your help to accomplish shooting the remaining scenes and footage to ensure the film’s completion at the end of 2011.

Any money contributed would go towards paying for equipment hire, transportation and location fees, production design and unit management.

We have an incredible cast of local actors coupled with a brilliantly dedicated crew who need the financial support to be able to put in the long hours, hard work and commitment to be able to finish what we started at the beginning of the year and end up with a tangible version of the dream of a film we’ve had in our minds for a very long time.

Donations can be made via Paypal — any amount is appreciated and contributions over $50 will receive a copy of the film on DVD after its release and a hand-written letter from the writer/director.

Thank you to everyone for all their interest, encouragement and support! We couldn’t be making this film without you.

So I’m not sure how this happened but Tiny Earthquakes has finally climbed over the 50% acquired funding benchmark!
Everyone who has donated so far has been completely amazing, and we want more people to get involved with contributing to the project and getting something back from it.
The minimum amount anyone can contribute is $1, and if you are in a position to be generous enough with $20+, you are automatically entitled to a signed DVD of the film, and many, many other goodies including a zine, photographic prints and limited edition posters by extremely talented Melbourne graphic designers.
PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO:
- have a look at the project page, donate and/or spread the word to all your friends!

Eggs & Chickens

I saw a status update on my newsfeed last night, talking about the current sale going on at AirAsia, ending this Sunday for travel between February and June next year. I panicked.

So, I mentioned this earlier but: at Saturday night’s New Pornographers gig, they got an audience member to sing Myriad Harbour with them. Brave Andrew took the challenge and fucking killed it (with a few hiccups). He asked before and after the song that the moment be recorded, and it was!! So happy making. This looks like it was taken very near to where I was standing and I think the person to the left of whoever took this might be my friend Anneli? Anyway! Enjoy.

La Trobe Lip Dub 2010!

So, I’ve been a member of La Trobe University Student Theatre & Film for 3 years, and I’ve not seen us do anything this huge ever. The day of filming was so great and full of running and laughing and a little bit of falling (3:52). Please watch it and get our page views up and make us kids feel even better about this project of ours. Also see if you can spot me (I’m wearing a long red scarf and a blue top; I’m in the “nerds with laptops” section - of course - and also in the front row at the end [can you tell I really want you to spot me?])  ♥

PS: The Lip Dub was done to Gotye’s Learnalilgivinanlovin

I just realized I’m in love with this city

  • on the 57 to Raglan Street for my friend’s Fringe show, there were two aggressively polite guys who heckled the tram driver into staying 5 minutes for a girl who was across the street trying to catch the tram, and a lady into taking an empty seat (she declined). During the antics and when they got off, all the remaining passengers exchanged genuine smiles. “What about those guys, hey? It takes all sorts.”
  • on the 57 back to the city, I was helping my friend’s girlfriend find where she should get off, with a printout of Metlink’s Journey Planner and I actually knew where I was! I was telling her where we were and an older couple behind us tapped my shoulder for directions as well. Passin’ for a native!
  • on the 86 back home, there was a girl named Courtney Barnett was playing for the Melbourne Music Festival and it was lovely. I thought people would be annoyed, especially because it was super packed along Bourke Street, but people weren’t, and quite a group clapped for her when she got off.
